Forum on Future Directions and Opportunities in Robotics, Control & Cyber Physical Systems

The technologies such as Robotics, Control and Automation, and Cyber-Physical Systems have been tremendously changing how human beings produce and live. The prevalence of the Internet of Things in manufacturing and the consequent technology-driven changes promise to trigger a new industrial revolution. In view of the growing demand and emerging market for advanced manufacturing facilities to establish smart factories over the world, governments have been setting priorities and strategies to develop and innovate the relevant Cyber technology in Robotics, Control and Automation, and Intelligent Systems. The forum will facilitate a discussion about the future development directions and opportunities in Robotics, Control and Cyber-Physical Systems. The forum invites speakers from leading academic organizations and industrial companies to share their opinions, visions, and suggestions on the future Cyber technology.
BIOGRAPHY Jie Zhao received his B.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Mechatronics Engineering from Harbin Institute of Technology (HIT), Harbin, China, in 1990 and 1996 respectively. Presently, he is a professor of School of Mechatronics Engineering in HIT. Prof. Zhao is the head of Robotics Institute and former dean of School of Mechatronics Engineering in HIT, the Yangtze River scholars Distinguished Professor and the one of the first technology innovation leaders of National High-level personnel of special support program. He is also the expert group leader of Intelligent Robot in National High Technology Research and Development Program of China，one of the expertsof Key Projects of service robots in the National Science & Technology R & D Program. His research interests include bio-inspired robots, disaster searching and rescue robot, spacecraft simulation and testing, complex mechatronics system design and integration. Prof. Zhao has completed more than forty research projects including National Natural Science Foundation of China, National High Technology Research and Development program of China and National Science and Technology Major Project. He has authored one book, published over 280 technical papers and held more than 20 issued patents. Prof. Zhao has been awarded by four national or provincial prizes for progress in science and technology.
BIOGRAPHY Ning Xi received his D.Sc. degree in Systems Science and Mathematics from Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri, USA in December 1993. He is University Distinguished Professor, the John D. Ryder Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering and Director of Robotics and Automation Laboratory at Michigan State University. He was on-leave from Michigan State University and served as the founding head of the Department of Mechanical and Biomedical Engineering at City University of Hong Kong (2011-2013). Dr. Xi received the Best Paper Award in IEEE/RSJ International Conference on Intelligent Robots and Systems (IROS) in August, 1995, and the Best Paper Award in the 1998 Japan-USA Symposium on Flexible Automation. Dr. Xi was awarded the first Early Academic Career Award by the IEEE Robotics and Automation Society in May, 1999. He also received The Best Paper Award of IEEE Transactions on Automation Science and Engineering in 2007. Dr. Xi was awarded SPIE Nano Engineering Award in 2007. In addition, he is a recipient of US National Science Foundation CAREER Award. Dr. Xi is a fellow of IEEE. He also served as the President of IEEE Nanotechnology Council (2010-2011), a member of Administrative Committee of IEEE Robotics and Automation Society (2013-2015). He is the general chair of 2009 IEEE/RSJ International Conference on Intelligent Robots and Systems (IROS), the general Chair of 2014 IEEE International Conference on Robotics and Automation(ICRA). His research interests include robotics, manufacturing automation, micro/nano manufacturing, nano sensors and devices, and intelligent control and systems.
席宁教授于1993年12月在美国圣路易斯密苏里州华盛顿大学的系统科学与数学系获得博士学位。他是密歇根州立大学电气与计算器工程系的大学杰出教授及John D. Ryder讲座教授，兼该大学之机器人自动化实验室主任。他在2011-2013年时暂离密歇根州立大学，于香港城市大学创办机械及生物医学工程学系，担任该系的首任系主任。
席教授在1995年8月荣获IEEE / RSJ智能机器人系统国际会议(IROS)的最佳论文奖，也在1998年于《柔性自动化技术–日美座谈会》上荣获最佳论文奖。在1999年5月，席教授赢得IEEE机器人与自动化学会的青年科学家奖。2007年时，除获得IEEE自动化科学与工程会刊的最佳论文奖外，再荣获SPIE的纳米工程大奖。此外，他更是美国国家科学基金会（National Science Foundation）的《杰出青年学者奖》得主。
BIOGRAPHY Zhiwei Xu is a professor and CTO of the Institute of Computing Technology (ICT) of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. His prior industrial experience included chief engineer of Dawning Corp., a leading high-performance computer vendor in China. He currently leads “Cloud-Sea Computing Systems”, a 10-year research project of the Chinese Academy of Sciences that aims at developing billion-thread computers with elastic processors. ZhiweiXu holds a Ph.D. degree from the University of Southern California.
徐志伟于1987年获美国南加州大学博士学位。现任中国科学院计算技术研究所研究员、学术委员会主任。曾任曙光超级服务器、国家高性能计算环境、网络虚拟计算环境、网格操作系统、处理ZB级数据的海云计算系统等多个国家和欧盟科研项目的技术负责人。获得“国家杰出青年科学基金”、国家科技进步奖、中国计算机学会“王选奖”。历任曙光信息产业有限公司总工程师，中科院计算所研究员、副所长、总工程师、学位委员会主席。2001年以来，他的志愿者服务包括：担任科技部十二五“中国云”科技专项总体专家组成员，中科院“未来信息技术先导专项”总体组成员，科技部“中国国家网格”重大专项专家组成员，欧盟 XtreemOS网格操作系统重大项目专家组成员，国家自然科学基金委信息科学部专家咨询委员；担任龙星计划委员会共同主席；担任Journal of Computer Science and Technology执行主编，《计算机研究与发展》主编，IEEE Transactions on Computers、 IEEE Transactions on Services Computing、Parallel Computing、Journal of Parallel and Distributed Computing等国际期刊编委。
BIOGRAPHY Dr. Ruicheng Li, joined SAP headquarter in Germany in 1994, is managing SAP Labs China in 6 Locations Shanghai, Beijing, Nanjing, Xi’an, Chengdu as Senior Vice President, MD of SAP LabsChina.
Prior to this position, Dr. Li has been responsible for SAP HCM Product Development as Global Vice President. He has managed teams in 8 countries like China, Germany, Brazil, India, Russia, Czech, Hungary and Dubai. Dr. Li has been worked in several countries like Germany, Singapore and China. He has rich experiences in managing international teams with multi-cultural background.
Dr. Li has taken different roles in large degrees of diversity at SAP in several countries: Vice President for North Asia, Director for Business Development for Asia Pacific in area for Government, Defense, Healthcare and Higher Education, Senior Product Development Manager for European Countries, Product Development Manager for Asia Pacific, Quality Manager for Asia Pacific and Project Manager for large applications. He is instrumental to set up business in public sector for Asia Pacific and to develop business application solution for HCM country versions and as well as for Public sector for Asia Pacific.
Dr. Li is also a co-founder of Society for Chinese Physicists in Germany and was leading the society as Chairman and spokesman. He was also editor for Physical magazine published by this society.
He holds PhD in Physics from University Stuttgart/Germany. Prior to the PhD Study, Dr. Li was working as scientist at Max-Planck Institute in Mainz/Germany.
He has finished his master study in Technical University Berlin in 1988 under the scholarship of the German DAAD and graduated as Bachelor at Technological University Beijingin 1983.
He has published articles in several famous international science magazines such as surface science. He owns patents in software developments. During his employment, he has received several awards such as president awards due to his outstanding performance.
BIOGRAPHY Zhijia Yang, Ph.D. is a professor of Industrial Control Netwrok and System Lab in Shenyang Institute of Automation, CAS. The research and development direction include: Fieldbus, Industrial Ethernet, Industrial WSN technology; System on Chip and RealTime Embedded System Design; Measurement Technology and Automatic Equipment, Industrial Instruments and Control System. He was awarded 2 Second Class Prizes for The State Scientific and Technological Progress of China, and 4 First Class Prizes of STP for Ministry Level. Now, He is an expert group leader of Advanced Manufacturing System Control group in Ministry of Science and Technolgy of China.
BIOGRAPHY Fang Xu is a research professor and graduate student supervisor. He is the president of Central Research Institute in Shenyang SIASUN Robot and Automation Co, LTD. Xu has been supported with the special government allowance and serves as a member of the Service Robot Expert Group which belongs to the Science and Technology Department of China. He is a member of the editorial board of the journal Robotics hosted by Chinese Association of automation, as well as a director of Liaoning Association of automation. In addition, he is a review expert of the government’s “863” key projects.
Fang Xu has long been engaged in the research, development and industrialization of robotics technology. He, as the project leader and the main participant, has assumed a number of important national scientific and technological projects, including researches of “the Eighth Five-Year”, “the Ninth Five-Year”, “The Tenth Five-Year” and “The Eleventh Five-year” projects, the government’s NC and IC major projects, “863” plan projects and other important scientific research projects from Chinese Academy of Sciences as well as the Province and City governments. In these projects, he solved many problems of robotic technology and developed industrial robot series with own intellectual property, which achieved the advanced level of international similar products. Thus his research provided high economic and social benefits, and made a significant contribution to the robotic industry’s development of China. He has won the National Science and Technology Progress Second Prize Award, Chinese Academy of Sciences Science and Technology Progress Special Award, and three provincial and ministerial level Science and Technology First Prize Award. He has published more than fifty papers and holds over ten national patents. Furthermore, he has cultivated several tens of doctors and masters.
